Description

A comforting and savory Salisbury steak recipe featuring seasoned ground beef patties topped with rich gravy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • pounds ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
  • ½ cup Italian breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons dry mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 beef bouillon cube, crushed
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 2 beef bouillon cubes
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 4 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 medium yellow onion, sliced into half-moons
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, ketchup, dry mustard, Worcestershire sauce, beef bouillon, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
  2. Shape the mixture into patties, ideally about ¾ inch thick.
  3. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes per side or until browned.
  4. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  5. In the same skillet, add sliced onions and sauté until softened. Then add minced garlic and mushrooms (if using), cooking until aromatic.
  6. Stir in hot water, beef bouillon cubes, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and pepper. Bring to a simmer.
  7. In a small bowl, mix cornstarch with a bit of cold water to form a slurry. Gradually whisk this into the gravy, stirring until thickened.
  8. Return the browned patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Spoon the gravy over the patties and let it simmer on low for about 3-5 minutes.
  9. Ensure the patties reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) before serving.
  10. Serve hot, generously covered with onion and mushroom gravy.

Notes

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to three days or frozen for up to three months. Reheat until reaching 165°F (74°C).
